The reason is, in the process of caring for your hair, you are unknowingly doing certain hair care mistakes that damage your hair rather than nourishing it.
The effort becomes all the more a wasteful one when mistakes are committed in the process of hair care.
So, you need to know how to care your hairs in the right away to have healthy hairs.
1. Avoiding hair spray
It’s gotten a bad rap, but hair spray contains a polymer that actually locks out humidity, says Cheri McMaster, senior scientist for Pantene. And contrary to popular belief, it’s not harmful. “It’s the polymer, not the alcohol, that dries on your hair,” she says. “The alcohol evaporates before it hits your head.” Use just enough to hold your style.
2. Always fastening your ponytail in the same spot
Because strands tend to get caught — and broken — in bands, it’s a good idea to alternate the fastening point. “Move it up a half inch one day, then down the next,” says celebrity stylist Richard Marin. Using seamless elastic bands will further minimize damage.
3. Ignoring your scalp
To grow healthy hair, your scalp needs nourishment. “Massaging your head with your fingertips will stimulate blood flow,” says Christopher Mackin, a trichologist (hair expert) at the Gil Ferrer Salon, in New York City. For extra care, use a leave-in scalp treatment.
4. Blow-drying hair that’s dripping wet
Not only will this make it difficult to style your hair, it will cause a ton of heat damage. “A blow dryer should be used on damp — not wet — hair for 20 minutes, tops,” says stylist Peter Coppola, creator of a QVC hair-care line. Before applying heat, wrap hair in a towel for five minutes, then let hair air-dry for another five.
5. Combing wet hair from roots to ends
A comb is easier on fragile wet hair than a brush is, but tugging it from scalp to tips can cause breakage. First, smooth out knots with a leave-in detangler. Then, says Marin, start to comb at ends, working up in sections. Many among us try to flatten or curl our hair strands while they are still wet. Using heated up tools over cold strands of hair weakens the tresses, breaking them up further.
Dry your hair completely before applying any hot hair styling tools on them. Remember, not to mix heat and cold, since this is one of those deadly hair care mistakes that cause heavy damages to hair.
6. Sleeping with your hair loose
How does your hair look when you wake up in the morning? If you look like a current stuck crow or if it is super tangled, then you are doing serious damage to your hair.
Letting your hair loose while sleeping causes dryness, tangles, and frizz after all the tossing and turning you do during the night. Thus, it is important to tie your hair when you sleep. That being said – Don’t tie your hair too tight as it will lead to more hair breakage as discussed in the previous point. Instead, just put a loose braid as it will prevent your hair from getting tangled and frizzy. This way, you will wake up with tangle-free and undisturbed locks.
7. style first, spray next
Applying spray before styling is another common hair care mistake that many follow out of ignorance. When you go in for styling your hair, the spray must be used only after the complete styling process is over. This is to avoid the burning of alcohols in hairspray with the heat during the styling process.
Remember style first. Spraying comes only as the next step always.
