7 Skincare Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Face

 

Your skin requires regular care to keep it looking healthy but wrong care can lead to skin problems. One of the most important tenets of a healthy skin routine is using products with ingredients that help address your skincare concerns and are suitable for your skin type. Apart from using the right products, it’s just as important to be mindful of these common skincare mistakes.

 

1. Picking at your face

Every time you pick at your skin, you end up irritating your skin and it can create scars and wrinkles. It can also aggravate your acne and in addition to scarring, it can cause skin discolouration. Picking at your skin can also lead to infection which can make your skin worse.

 

2. Not getting enough sleep

Studies have shown that getting optimum sleep is not only beneficial for your mind and body but helps keep your skin healthy as well. When you sleep, your skin’s blood flow increases which help in collagen synthesis and repair the damage caused to the skin from UV exposure, pollution, dust, dirt and more. Lack of sleep can often show up as dark circles, swollen eyes, fine lines and wrinkles and more. Before you go to sleep, cleanse your face with soap to remove any makeup and build-up of oil, dirt and dust. 3. Not removing makeup before going to bed

The skin undertakes the process of renewing and repairing itself at night. When you leave makeup on your skin, it interferes with the skin’s natural processes, clogs pores and can lead to acne and blackheads. Before going to bed, cleanse your face with a natural cleanser and moisturize to let it breathe right.

 

4. Following the same routine in day time and night time

During day time, our skin plays a defensive role and needs protection from UVA rays, pollution, dust and dirt. At night, when we go to sleep, the skin cells work to repair and regenerate from the damage caused during the day. The products we use for our day routine and night routine should be different to meet these goals. In the morning, use a gentle cleanser along with mineral-based sunscreen to protect your skin from the UV rays. It’s best to use skincare products with antioxidants in the daytime to protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. At night, you can use a face mask, toner or exfoliate your skin after cleansing it. Don’t forget to moisturize your skin before going to sleep.

5. Skipping out on sunscreen

While you probably know about how exposure to the sun’s rays can lead to early signs of ageing. However, the light coming from electronic devices such as your smartphone and laptop can also penetrate your skin and result in hyperpigmentation. UVA rays from the sun are known to penetrate through windows and can get absorbed in your skin which can result in early signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. It’s best to use a mineral-based sunscreen which offers broad-spectrum protection and is SPF 30 or above to keep your skin protected from the harmful rays.

 

6. Not exfoliating your skin regularly

Exfoliating your skin helps get rid of dead skin cells, removes excess sebum and opens clogged pores which helps reduce blackheads and acne. Exfoliating your skin will also help it absorb skincare products in a better manner and reduce the size of the pores. It’s best to exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week.

 

7. Using skincare products with harmful chemicals

One of the most common skincare mistakes that people tend to make is using products with harmful chemicals or toxins in them. Skincare products often have ingredients such as sulphates, parabens, mineral oil, silicones, phenoxyethanol and more which can clog pores, cause skin irritation, get absorbed through the skin and more. It’s always better to choose skincare products that use natural ingredients and are dermatologically-tested and certified toxin-free.
